The Modern Contrast of the American Identity

The Modern Contrast of the American Identity

Join us at SCOPE Miami Beach from December 3-8th for "The Modern Contrast of the American Identity" by VSCO and curated, directed and conceptualized by Liza Gershman.

VSCO, a community-driven platform for photographers, is proud to elevate the work of artists around the world at SCOPE Art Show. “The Modern Contrast of the American Identity” examines the complexities of race, identity, and belonging in America. The exhibit draws viewers in with Liza Gershman’s large-format, color photograph of two individuals draped in an American flag. The surrounding black-and-white works by Will Foerster, Martine Severin, Tom Sanders, Weston Applegate, Emily Jahr, Dulce Bautista, Jake Myers, and Kyla Rys explore the visible and invisible forces that work to define who we are. Together, the images carry viewers through a new vision of contemporary America.

"The Modern Contrast of the American Identity" brings together a dynamic collection of works that explore identity, culture, and the American experience through the timeless medium of photography. Each artist in this exhibit offers a unique lens on the multifaceted concept of what it means to be American, using primarily monochrome imagery to emphasize form, emotion, and narrative. Liza Gershman’s powerful image of two individuals wrapped in the American flag symbolizes unity and diversity within the American identity, inviting viewers to reflect on shared symbols and their complex meanings. The juxtaposition of the two figures against an expansive landscape speaks to themes of belonging and representation in the vast cultural tapestry of the United States.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I am honored to have conceptualized, pitched, and executed the VSCO Gallery at SCOPE Miami 2024. Serving as curator, Creative Director, and exhibition designer, I developed the overarching theme, secured participation from a diverse group of artists, and spearheaded sponsorships and brand partnerships. I successfully pitched the concept to VSCO, negotiated the sponsorship with SCOPE, and collaborated with both organizations to bring a compelling installation to life.

The gallery features works by a range of artists, including former students and colleagues from my tenure as a professor at SCAD, all exploring the thought-provoking theme, What Does It Mean to Be American? I am also privileged to have two of my own photographs included in the exhibition, celebrating the transformative power of storytelling through art while fostering meaningful connections between creators and audiences.
